Popular Types of Impact Windows by Upgrade General Contractors

Types of Impact Windows

The most common and most popular types of impact windows we offer include:

  1. Single-Hung Windows: Single-hung impact windows are the most common option in the US.  The bottom glass pane slides up to open, moving down vertically to close again. This window style is the most cost-effective option across almost every room of your home.
  2. Double-Hung Windows: Some homeowners choose double-hung windows instead of a single for better airflow. Because of the extra mobility, double-hung windows are often slightly more expensive. With double-hung windows, the lower pane slides up to create airflow throughout the lower pane and slides down to let air flow through the upper pane. The glass opens from both the top and the bottom.
  3. Casement Windows: Casement windows open inward (sometimes outward) and typically are operated by a crank mechanism. They can be hinged on either the left or the right, depending on the homeowner’s preference. This style offers a more open, clear line-of-sight than single or double-hung windows.
  4. Fixed/Picture Windows: Sometimes referred to as “window walls,” picture windows range from floor-to-ceiling glass to wide panes over a bathtub or in your living room. While these fixed windows don’t open, they can give you the illusion of openness— much like a sunroom— while holistically connecting your indoor and outdoor spaces.
  5. Roller/Sliding Windows: This window type is often considered a sophisticated look for dining rooms or spacious bedrooms. It can illuminate a space brightly because the long windows usually stretch across a room. When open, they can let a generous breeze in and a spacious view to the outside. The cost of rollers often depends on their width, they’re comparable to the cost of single-hung windows.
  6. Bay Window: Bay windows protrude outward, typically spaced in 3’s in a curved fashion. Because these windows hang out over your wall in the exterior, they create the illusion of more space without costly home additions. This window style is typically seen with one larger picture window in the center, flanked by two double-hung windows on each side.
  7. Skylight Windows: Skylights add natural light to a room without sacrificing privacy or wall space. They can be used to show off a ceiling's striking pitch, bring the beautiful sky “in,” while offering sun and treetop views. This window style is ideal for illuminating hallways or small spaces like bathrooms without extra wall space, but could, of course, be installed in any room of your home.
